Jeweller's house II, Clapton, London

 Jeweller's house II, Clapton, London

After 5 years living in their house designed by our practice the family had outgrown their home and were in need of a more spacious property. They found a appropriate house and contacted Ben Kuenzel Architecture again to extend and reconfiguring the house. The design included underpinning the basement and installing a waterproofing system to accommodate a guest bedroom with en-suit bathroom, a snug and a utility room. A side return extension was added to create a larger dining kitchen area. A pergola which is partly glazed was designed to interlink the house to the garden via a transition zone. The new garden layout included a trampoline, a garden shed and pizza oven. A roof extension was added to provide two further bedrooms and a bathroom. When extending the roof the bonnet was added to the front, a feature that these Victorian houses originally had and that was removed in a former refurbishment. The front garden was redesigned to accommodate bike storage on two levels by Bikebox Works Ltd. Besides rebuilding parts of the unsound structure, the whole envelope was insulated and new doors and windows were installed throughout. The client was very specific in their choice of colour and finish internally. In every room the wall and ceiling finish was chosen. The client choose it in combination with varnished timber of exposed floor joists of the kitchen ceiling, new panelling in the stair case or tongue and groove cladding in the loft. In places the raw wall with timber stud-work and brick infill was kept exposed.
